Updates are available for versions 7.5.2 and 7.5.3 of the system software that contain substantial performance enhancements and improvements. These updates are strongly recommended by Apple for all Macintosh computers running previous releases of System 7.5 because they contain bug fixes and allow Power Macintosh programs to launch significantly faster when virtual memory is on. The updates to System 7.5.3 and System 7.5.5 are available from Apple Computer www.apple.com or from the Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition CD.
Using Punctuation Characters in Folder Names May Cause Problems
If the name of the folder you install PowerPoint 98 Viewer into includes a comma (,), single quotation mark ('), or exclamation point (!), you may have problems when you use the programs. To avoid problems, use the default folder or use only letters and numbers in folder names.
PowerPoint 98 Viewer can read a text file that describes multiple files to be presented. The text files should be created in a word processor and saved with the ".lst" extension. When creating the text file use the following format:
The following commands (command-line switches) are supported:
Automatic advance /A or /a (If timings are present)
Slide range /R=n-m or /r=n-m where n<=m
Loop continuously /L or /l
Kiosk password /K or /k for setting a kiosk mode for file
Print /P or /p for printing file
Write the file out where you specify the command and follow it by the exact path or relative path and file name. There must be a space between the command line switch and the path.
Take your sounds and movies with you. Since movies are usually large files they are not stored inside the PowerPoint presentation file. When you take your presentation with you be sure to bring along the supporting movies and sounds. It's a good idea to keep the presentation, inserted movies and sounds all in the same folder when you are creating the presentation.
Not all systems have the same fonts installed. If your presentation uses special fonts be sure to take the font along with the presentation to the location for best presentation. See your Mac OS documentation for more information on where fonts are stored and how to install fonts in the system. Also consult the licensing agreement for the fonts to make sure all requirements are met.
When adding Hyperlinks to other files or applications it's a good idea to make the paths to those files relative rather than absolute. If links are absolute they will not function correctly. Please see PowerPoint help regarding the addition of relative Hyperlinks.
Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Viewer MEMORY AND PERFORMANCE ISSUES
The following is a list of symptoms that may occur if there is not enough memory available in PowerPoint 98 Viewer. If you are receiving any of these symptoms, you can increase the memory requirements for PowerPoint by doing the following:
1. Quit PowerPoint 98 Viewer.
2. From the desktop, double-click the hard disk icon.
3. Double-click the folder you installed PowerPoint 98 Viewer in, usually
Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Viewer.
4. Click the Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Viewer icon.
5. On the File menu, click Get Info.
6. Under Memory Requirements, increase the value in the
Preferred Size box by the amount listed below for the symptom
you are experiencing.
* When you open a large PowerPoint presentation or a PowerPoint for Windows presentation that contains many graphics, you may receive a memory message. Additionally, if the presentation contains a large graphic, 1.5M or greater, the graphic may not appear. This occurs because PowerPoint does not have enough memory to display or read the file. SOLUTION: Increase the memory requirements for PowerPoint by 5M. Also, make sure that virtual memory is turned on. Increase the memory requirements for PowerPoint until the graphic appears and you no longer receive the memory message.
* When you open a PowerPoint for Windows file that has a large number of images PowerPoint 98 Viewer cursor may remain busy for a period of time while the graphics are optimized for the Macintosh platform.
When you open in PowerPoint 98 Viewer a PowerPoint 3.0, 4.0, 95 or 97 for Windows file that contains a sound object or movie object, the sound or movie may not play. The icon for the object appears in the file; however, you may receive a message when you double-click the object. To play the sound or movie in your PowerPoint 98 Viewer the presentation will need to be edited in PowerPoint 98, Macintosh Edition by deleting the icons or objects for the sound or movie and reinsert the sound or movie object in the presentation.

If you use Netscape Navigator as your Web browser, you may receive the following message when you click a hyperlink or open a Web page in an Office program: "Office cannot open the URL you specified. Make sure you have a web browser installed and that it is configured correctly." This message appears because Netscape has not been registered in the Internet Preferences file. To avoid receiving this message, you can use the Internet Config application to register Netscape Navigator in the Internet Preferences file. Using Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Viewer with Symantec AntiVirus for Macintosh (SAM¬)
Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Viewer is incompatible with Symantec AntiVirus for Macintosh virus definitions released before February 1998. If you are using one of these older SAM virus definition files and you cannot immediately download the latest update, you should disable the SAM Intercept extension in Extensions Manager before you run any of the Office applications.
